About Victoria in Bloom
Victoria in Bloom is a way of saying thanks to renters for their hard work to create and maintain fabulous gardens that contribute to the communities in which they live. The competition recognises and rewards the creative green thumbs living in public or community housing.
Renters enter all types of gardens – from balconies to back yards and community gardens. No garden is too big or small.
There is no age limit either, with the Best Young Gardener category opening doors for under 25s who enjoy gardening or are thinking of a career in this field.
Meet Dekoda Bell
Victoria in Bloom's Best Young (under 25) Gardener for 2023-2024
Based in the outer eastern region, Dekoda Bell is a tradie by day, award-winning gardener by weekend.
Before getting into gardening, Dekoda says he was 'always getting into trouble.' Bored one day, he went out into the garden – and really enjoyed it.
At the age of 17, Dekoda won Best Young Gardener for his full and well-designed creative garden.
It will put a spotlight on your house and make you feel better
'My mates always come 'round and go ‘Look at your garden!'
According to Dekoda, his mates, neighbours and especially his mum love his garden. Some neighbours even come by to compliment Dekoda on his garden and encourage him to 'keep it up' or ask him to help with their gardens.
Dekoda's advice is for everyone to get into gardening. 'No one is going to judge you,' he says.
'Your garden may not look good at the start, but it will get there and look better and better.'
