What does non-binary mean?

Non-binary is a term for people whose gender sits outside of the spectrum of man or woman or male and female. A person who is non-binary might feel like they have a mix of genders, or like they have no gender at all.

A person might identify solely as non-binary or relate to non-binary as an umbrella term. They might consider themselves as genderfluid, genderqueer, trans masculine, trans feminine, agender or bigender.

In Victoria, we welcome and celebrate everyone’s individuality and diversity including people who do not fit into a binary gender. We are all different and it’s up to each and every one of us to celebrate this difference and respect the experiences of non-binary people.

We can all help to stop gender-based discrimination and celebrate diversity so everyone can be their authentic selves.

You can make a difference by sharing your pronouns. It is an easy way to not only inform people you communicate with of your pronouns but normalizes this process for everyone.

On this year’s International Non-Binary People's Day, we celebrate the wonderful diversity of people of all genders around the globe.

You belong, you are seen, and you are loved!
