This October 1 for International Day for Older Persons, we celebrate older Victorians’ valuable role in our communities.

This year’s theme is Ageing with Dignity and highlights the importance of strengthening care and support systems for older people.

More than 20 per cent of Victorians are 60 years and over. Our diverse older population is growing faster than any other age group. By 2046, it’s set to increase by 60 per cent.

The day is a positive reminder that growing older is an achievement and cause for celebration, respect and pride.

Celebrating growing older

International Day for Older Persons lines up with the start of the 2024 Victorian Seniors Festival. It’s an opportunity to celebrate older Victorians with friends and family, and to be mindful of keeping those connections strong.

The Festival features free and low-cost events across the state. Be part of the fun and visit the Seniors Festival calendar to find an event near you.

The theme this year is – Explore. Engage. Evolve. – encouraging older Victorians to stay curious and connected by exploring new activities, meeting new people, and changing how we think of ageing.

The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards are a feature of the Festival, with an awards ceremony presented each October. These important awards celebrate Victorian seniors who contribute to our community through volunteering.

Supporting Victorians to age well

The Ageing Well Action Plan outlines the Victorian Government’s vision to age well as we take part in our community, connect with others and live healthy, active and purposeful lives.

The whole-of-government action plan is driving action across four priority areas.

Resilient connected seniors

Supporting older people to have a sense of purpose through social, cultural, and intergenerational connections.

Tech savvy seniors

Supporting older Victorians to take part in the digital world. Ensuring those who can’t do not experience discrimination and can access services via other means.

Valuing senior Victorians

Reducing ageism and increasing visibility and appreciation of older people as valued and contributing Victorian citizens.

Health self-care

Using healthcare advances driven by the pandemic to improve the health of older people and their ability to protect themselves.

Learn more about the priority areas and read the plan on the Seniors Online Ageing Well Action Plan web page.
