Autism friendly workplaces work for everyone

We all deserve a workplace that supports us to thrive, and sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, in partnership with Amaze, proudly celebrate the next phase of the Change Your Reactions campaign – Autism friendly workplaces work for everyone.

The campaign showcases four Autistic people contributing to workplaces across Victoria in construction, office work, hospitality and education. Steve, Rebecca, Jonathon and Christina share their real-life stories and examples of small changes workplaces can provide to help Autistic people perform at their best.

Autism and employment

Employing Autistic people adds value to every workplace. However, Autistic people experience an unemployment rate eight times higher than people without disability.

Many Autistic people who are currently employed experience challenges in the workplace that don’t allow them to perform at their best.

The Autism friendly workplaces work for everyone campaign works to address some of those challenges and build an inclusive Victoria that works for everyone.

Autism-inclusive workplaces

Making workplaces autism friendly is easier than you think.

Small changes – such as providing headphones or written instructions – can make life better for Autistic people, and for others too.

Here are some small changes that you can make today:

  • Be a clear communicator
  • Ask what supports your employees need to perform at their best
  • Allow for different communication preferences
  • Offer flexibility.

The Change Your Reactions public education campaign is proudly part of the Victorian Autism Plan and the Victorian Government’s vision for greater disability inclusion.
